The GREENCHEM project has officially kicked off. On 14 and 15 April, we met with the other 22 partners to map out future courses of action and establish a European network of centres of professional excellence in digital and sustainable chemistry.
The chemical sector is an “industry of industries” and is of strategic importance to the European Commission, as well as being a key driver in the Murcia Region Industrial Plan 2026–2035. It has never been more important to avoid relying on products manufactured in third countries outside the European Union. Doing so in an environmentally responsible and efficient manner is essential.
That is why the European Commission has high hopes for this project, developed by Skills Divers and selected as one of the 15 centres of professional excellence in the 2025 call for proposals from among 305 submissions.
Skills Divers is responsible for the project’s quality assurance, amongst other tasks, and we will work to ensure that the results are of use to the regional and European industries.
The project will be coordinated by UCAM over the next four years and has a budget of €5 million for 22 partners from 10 different European countries. In addition to UCAM, the consortium comprises key partners in the sector, such as the Association of Chemists of the Region of Murcia, the SEF’s national chemistry reference centre in Cartagena, and the Jaume I University in Castellón.

The meeting took place at the UCAM HiTech where the partners outlined the initial areas of focus for the coming years; this marks a milestone in internationalisation aimed at bridging the gap between the classroom and the real needs of industry. To this end, it will modernise strategic infrastructure such as the polymer recycling pilot plant in Cartagena and three others in Europe, ensuring that future professionals operate in an industry with zero environmental impact.
The project has been funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ programme.
